You are using Microsoft Internet Explorer! In the Best Practices guide on Symantec, it says just to install the backup agent on each host, yet in the symantec vmware FAQ, it says you can use the vmware agent to backup all the guests through vcenter. Or would it be better to add another virtual nic to each host and use the regular agent to backup to the media server?

I also read the vmware agent can backup exchange without an agent actually on exchange? How does this work? I also read something about Symantec netbackup 7 in some forums, and it seems you need this to backup exchange through vmware in order for exchange to backup correctly?

Thanks in advanced everybody! You can probably install agents in the guests, in order to restore individual files directly into them. About the section to the NIC, think about this, to use the isolated network, you need to be able to access it from all the components that need it, so the backup server should be able to talk with your SAN and your ESX hosts, either thru the regular network, or thru the isolated.

Ideally you would want isolated to reduce the stress in the other network. Even before VM, it was a good idea to have a separate network for backup, this way you could backup without bogging down the network.

It wasn't always implemented, but with SAN it is more natural, so adding the ESX server to the isolated network is your best move. Best practices include tips and recommendations to help you effectively use the Backup Exec Agent for VMware. If you have VMware Tools for vSphere 6. You cannot select individual drives, folders, and files from the virtual machines that appear when you expand VMware vCenter and ESX Servers.

Note that if you select the vCenter server or the ESX server as a backup resource, all virtual machines are backed up. For a recurring job, any virtual machines that you add after the job is created are included in the backup. Note that if you select to back up the vCenter server or the ESX server, the backup job does not include the following:. If you want to use GRT for some virtual machines, but not for others, set up jobs as follows:. The Agent for Windows must be installed on the virtual machines that you include in this backup job.

You must provide the appropriate credentials to access the virtual machines and the applications that reside on them. If a virtual machine does not support GRT, but the options to enable application GRT are selected, the job will complete with exceptions.
